  SELF ARRESTING WITH SELF ARREST SKI POLES
  It is nice to have some way of stopping a slide especially in the spring on steep corn snow or anytime on hard "boiler plate".
  Without picks on your poles you can only hope to use the edges of your skis to brake or steer and this would be futile in many cases. Since the backcountry is not contrived for your safety and you can quickly accelerate into rocks below, there is a lot of potential danger.
  Do not expect any self arrest grip to stop you very quickly if at all in some conditions.
  The angle and the hardness of the snow surface are obvious factors.
  Your chances of stopping as quick as possible are increased if you...
  1. Use only one pole with two hands.
  2. Letting go of the unused pole place that free hand on the top of the self arrest grip and don't let it get jerked out of your hands.
  3. Dig the pick in with all your weight by holding it under your chest as opposed to above your head.
  4. Do not use your skis to brake at high speeds to avoid flipping.
  5. Place the pick quickly as possible before you accelerate too fast.
  6. Practice to get a feel for the pick and it's limitations.
  Both the Ramer and the Black Diamond poles with self arrest grips went for about the same price, about $90 but the Ramer poles have been harder and harder to get as they phase out civilian sales.
  THE RAMER POLE
  The Ramer pole has a self arrest grip that consists of one piece of high strength plastic. (My buddies and I have arrested many times in hard spring snow with Ramer arrest grips and never seen the plastic break.) It has a hand guard that would protect your fingers and grip if you were arresting on hard, rough snow. The pick is drooped enough to be safer if you took a tumbling fall than the OLD Black Diamond design which stuck straight out and would be scary to fall on. There is also a second minor "pick" at the bottom of the hand guard which would offer additional braking power. It has an easily adjusted strap. The whole grip is removable and can easily be replaced with Ramer's standard grip. The poles convert into a probe and are also adjustable in length by means of a series of holes that line up with a metal button. You simply depress the buttons and slide the tubing to the desired length. Line up the buttons with the new holes and they pop out, locking the pole securely. This system allows for matching the lengths of the poles quickly by counting holes. On other adjustable poles, you must go by marks which are painted on and wear off with use. Another advantage of the button system is that it will never slip or become too tight to loosen like the twist lock design on some other adjustable poles.
