Keep one of these in your car and easily determine the condition of your battery. Check the DC voltage when the car is not running. It should be a minimum of 12v. Start the car and increase the engine speed to 1/3. Turn on the headlights. The voltage should now show 13.5 - 15v. This indicates that your alternator is charging the battery. A good thing. If the voltage shows 12-13v then one or more of the diodes in your alternator are probably bad and the alternator needs rebuilding (Not very difficult). If the voltage shows less than 12v at this point, your alternator may have failed or the connection may be bad.

Find out simply if the surfaces of the battery posts have oxidized causing a high resistance connection. Use the ohms meter and touch the probes together. The meter will show a very low resistance. Now touch one probe to a battery post and the other to the battery cable clamped around the same post. You should get a low resistance reading again meaning that electricity can flow easily from the battery into the cable. If a high resistance is indicated, remove the cable and scrape it's inside and the post til both surfaces are bright and then reassemble and test again.

Check any type of battery cell for condition. Rechargeables should be 1.2v, Alkaline should be 1.5v and Lithium should be 3.6v minimum.

Find shorts and broken wires easily. Hundreds of simple tests can be done to make your life easier and free you from dependence on high priced service.
